Find Charging Stations Near Me

Introduction to the ChargePoint EV Charging Network

ChargePoint is the largest EV charging network in the US. It was founded in 2007 and, since then, has rapidly expanded throughout the country.

With ChargePoint's vast network of Level 2 chargers, drivers can park up and leave their vehicle plugged in for a few hours while working or shopping. DC fast chargers, - known as Level 3 chargers - are also popping up everywhere, especially in heavily populated urban areas like California, Boston, New York City, and Washington, DC.

ChargePoint also partners with other EV charging networks, including EVGo and FLO. This means almost all electric car drivers are near a charging point, wherever they are. As a result, range anxiety is less prominent these days.

How Many ChargePoint Charging Stations in the US?

You’ll find about 18,000 ChargePoint charging stations in North America, with around 50,000 individual charge points. Most of these are in the US, although you’ll find plenty in Canada, too. These days, ChargePoint charging stations are spread throughout the US, but they’re concentrated in population-dense cities.

How Can You Find ChargePoint Charging Stations?

You can find ChargePoint charging stations through online maps, such as ChargePoint’s own. These can be accessed through the web or via ChargePoint’s mobile app.

Electrly has its own EV charger locator tool. We combine locations from all the most prominent EV charging networks in the US, putting all the information together in one place for you.

How Do You Use ChargePoint Charging Stations?

Follow these simple steps to use a ChargePoint charging station.

  1. Park your car in the space next to the charge connector.
  2. Authorize your payment. This can be done in one of three ways, explained at the end of this article.
  3. Remove the connector from the charging station by pressing the button, and plug it into your EV.
  4. Check the car is charging (most EVs have some kind of indicator lights).
  5. Return to the car when the batteries are at a reasonable level, and drive home!

How Fast Are ChargePoint Charging Stations?

ChargePoint charging stations charge at various speeds. In general, you’ll see the following:

  • Level 2 chargers: up to 12 kW.
  • Level 3 chargers: up to 500 kW.

Note that the car also has its own limitations regarding charging. Most EVs only accept up to about 12 kW of AC (Level 2) power. Hence, the charging station speed is irrelevant beyond this. At this rate, it would take about five hours to get 50 to 60 kWh stored in your battery.

You should also check its acceptance rate, which applies to Level 3 DC chargers. This shouldn’t be a problem if you have a newer EV. Assuming it’ll accept 250 kW of charging power, you should be fully charged in under an hour.

How Much Does It Cost to Charge Your Car at a ChargePoint Charging Station?

ChargePoint charging costs are set by the individuals managing them rather than ChargePoint. This means you’ll find varied rates throughout the country.

Some ChargePoint charging stations are free. Most AC chargers cost around $0.30 per kWh or $0.07 per minute, with DC chargers coming in at approximately $0.30 per minute.

How Can You Pay at a ChargePoint Charging Station?

There are three ways you can pay at a ChargePoint charging station:

  • Tapping your ChargePoint ID card against the reader.
  • Tapping your phone (provided you have the app and are signed in) against the reader.
  • Pressing ‘Start Charge’ in the app’s station details tab.

If you’re using one of ChargePoint’s partner EV charging stations, you can’t touch your phone against the reader. You’ll need to use one of the other methods (ID card or pressing ‘Start Charge’ in the app).
